Crosses 588,000 followers on mobile social network.

Facebook-owned Instagram has more than 100m users, averaging at around 7.3m per day and 40 per cent of the world's top brands (such as MTV) are using the retro photo-sharing platform.

Educational institution National Geographic is one of the aforementioned brands, and it managed to overtake Teen Vogue at the weekend to become the number one media brand on Instagram. The achievement comes following a partnership that started with Instagram two years ago.

The environmental firm has 588,000 followers on Instagram, 12.2m Facebook Likes, 2.7m Twitter followers and 920,000 YouTube subscribers, which also makes it the top brand on the streaming site.

Declan Moore, president of National Geographic Publishing and Digital Media, said: "On the eve of our 125th anniversary on January 13th, 2013, our brand continues to push the boundaries of storytelling, and we will engage with our customers on whatever new platform technology makes available.

"Photography is a huge component of the National Geographic brand legacy, and Instagram was a natural fit for photo distribution of our many contributing National Geographic photographers."
