Java app will work on more than 2,500 handsets with smartphone-esque features.

Facebook has launched a new mobile app, but it's not for smartphones or tablets. Facebook for Every Phone is, as the name implies, aimed at a far wider audience: feature phone owners.

The social network says the new app will work on more than 2,500 different handsets, with features including news feed, inbox and photos.

It's being distributed via the m.facebook.com mobile site, as well as through independent app stores like GetJar, Appia and Mobile Weaver.

Facebook has inked deals with operators in a number of emerging markets to offer 90 days of free data for users of the app - a full list of partners is provided in this blog post. "This experience is optimized to use less data than other Java apps or mobile sites, making it much more affordable for people to use when the 90-day period ends," explains the company.

It's the latest effort by Facebook to target emerging markets, with its mobile website already having found a big audience around the world.
