Can it improve Google Wallet?
TxVia is a specialist in prepaid and gift cards, and has relationships with all the major payment networks, and 100 million accounts.
The news of its acquisition appeared on the official blog of Osama Bedier, VP of Wallet and Payments at Google, who said it would "accelerate innovation towards our full Google Wallet" of coupons, payments and loyalty services using NFC contactless tech.
There were no details of deal terms, though it was clear from the blog that the two firms have been working together for a while.
Bedier said: "Finding and purchasing products is a big part of day-to-day life. At Google, we’re working to create new ways to improve the commerce experience. We’ve worked closely with TxVia over the last year, and they’re a forward-thinking team that will help us take the next steps in realizing the future of commerce."
Google Wallet certainly needs some love. In recent months the project has come under fire for security lapses and lost some of its key staff to rivals such as Square and PayPal.
