Up to 50,000 barcodes scanned each month.
eBay says the UK accounts for 20 per cent of total scans via barcode reading app RedLaser, which puts it in second place behind the US.
A total of two million Brits have downloaded RedLaser, scanning items as many as 50,000 times each month to compare prices on-the-go, search for deals and additional product information.
The online marketplace highlights research from the Internet Advertising Bureau that says 38 per cent of consumers use their smartphone while shopping in-store, as 49 per cent use their phone for price comparisons.
Angus McCarey, UK retail director for eBay, said: "Consumers are taking advantage of new technologies to get savvier in their shopping habits and seek out the best deals on the high-street. Apps like RedLaser are blurring the lines between online and offline shopping.
"We are now seeing one item purchased every second via mobile devices in Britain, that’s double the rate we saw at the beginning of last year. However, mobile is not only generating sales, it is the perfect shopping companion for bargain hunters."
