Microsoft launches Twitter app that censors potty-mouthed users.
Microsoft launched a slick Twitter application for its Zune HD portable media player yesterday, and was quickly embarrassed by an undocumented feature.
Users discovered that when they tweeted swearwords using the app, they were automatically asterisked. Unsurprisingly, they weren't too f***ing happy about it.
However, it seems Microsoft didn't intend to play the prude - the company claims it's an error, and is working on an update to correct it. Or, as its official statement released to Engadget puts it:
"The recently released Twitter for Zune HD application has been abbreviating some explicit words in tweets when viewed on the device; however these explicit words do appear in their full text on the Twitter site or on any other Twitter client. We have identified the issue and are taking steps to update the application as soon as possible to ensure Twitter for Zune HD users are able to view tweets in their original state."
It'd be funnier if the app automatically asterisked rival devices - Apple's i***e and i** t**** for example.
