ZTE aims to ship 100m smartphones a year by 2015

Chinese OEM keeps on upping its targets.

ZTE has barely been in the handset space for a decade, but with the advent of Android and the general strength/confidence of the Chinese economy, the firm is a making a determined assault on the smartphone space dominated by Apple, RIM and Samsung.

There's definitely a slot to be filled. None of the companies outside the top three has forward momentum. This applies to Sony, Motorola and LG, while Nokia and HTC are struggling to maintain previously lofty market shares.

ZTE told Reuters it sold 15 million smartphones last year and could sell up to 50 million in 2012. It's also planning to launch two 'phablets' this year.

Historically, ZTE made white label phones that were re-badged by operators. It still does. One recent example is the Orange San Francisco.

But last year, it made a big deal out of launching own brand Blade and Skate Android models, although neither made much headway in developed markets.
