Zinio launches standalone iPad apps for National Geographic

Bonus multimedia content included. And sharks.

National Geographic is the latest print magazine to launch on Apple's iPad, alongside its spin-off publication National Geographic Traveler.

The apps are both free on the App Store, although users must then buy single issues or annual subscriptions from within the app.

National Geographic has partnered with Zinio to launch the apps, which include additional photography, bonus video and audio content, animated maps and infographics, and archive content related to new features.

The mags use Zinio's own subscription process rather than Apple's in-app payments, and are also available to view on PCs and Macs via Zinio's website.

It's an extension of Zinio's business, since the company has previously sold e-mags through its own app, rather than make individual apps for publishers.
