Electronics giant has teamed with Japanese operator KDDI to make instruments out of handsets.

It sounds bizarre, and quite frankly it is, but Yamaha and KDDI have created five prototype mobile phones that also double as musical instruments.

A blog at design consultancy psfk details the project, the fruits of which are being shown off at the KDDI Designing Studio this month. Video also available here.

The collection features phones that can be variously 'played', turned into a turntable and broken down into a pair of virtual drumsticks, Wii-mote style.
