Yahoo launches Sketch-a-Search iPhone app

Sounds like a childhood toy, but isn't.

Yahoo has launched a pair of new iPhone apps, looking to boost its search services on Apple's handset.

Sketch-a-Search is the quirkier of the two. It's an app that aims to make it easier to find restaurants in a user's local area.

"You simply draw a boundary on your phone’s map to discover local businesses within that location," explains the company.

If it sounds a bit limited, it is. But Yahoo says it'll be adding more business types soon, as well as expanding the app internationally.

The second app is probably more important from Yahoo's perspective. Yahoo Search for iPhone is a powerful search app with built-in mapping, contextual results and voice search.

It's available in 22 countries from launch. One thing we're wondering: why launch two separate apps, rather than making Sketch-a-Search a feature within the wider search app?

Anyway, iPhone is now something of a battleground for search apps, with Yahoo's two apps going head to head with rivals from Google and Bing.
