Yahoo adds voice to UK mobile search

Voice activated mobile search comes to the UK as Yahoo steps up activities.

Internet search specialist Yahoo has unveiled its new voice-enabled Yahoo! oneSearch software that allows users to initiate searches by talking into their phone.

The program is available to download for select Blackberry devices including the 8800 series, the Curve and the Pearl and Nokia Series 60-powered handsets.

Yahoo says the service can be used for virtually anything that would usually require a text search, including flight numbers, sports results, website names and local restaurants.

For example, a search query like ‘Arsenal’ returns a set of results highlighting the latest results and schedules, breaking news, team profiles, images, and web links.

Mitch Lazar, managing director of Connected Life at Yahoo! Europe, said: “With today’s launch of Yahoo! oneSearch with voice, we are delivering the next generation of mobile search technology, making it easier and quicker for users to discover, initiate and input search queries.”
