World's first bamboo smartphone set for UK launch

The 'ADzero' is half the weight of an iPhone and powered by Android.

Middlesex University design student Kieron-Scott Woodhouse is the brains behind the bamboo creation, which is set for a release across the UK later in 2012.

23-year-old Woodhouse designed the 'ADzero' in his 'spare time' after becoming annoyed by the lack of variety on the market. He proceeded to post his designs across the web, which is when he was approached by an entrepreneur and within weeks the device was in the making.

The smartphone has been created from four-year-old organically grown bamboo, which has been treated to provide durability.

It runs on Android's OS, weighs half that of an iPhone but boasts a larger screen. Meanwhile, the phone's camera features 'ring flash' technology, which allows even illumination to minimise shadows. As it stands, the tech isn't available on any other mobile phone.

The ADzero was originally intended for China, but an unveiling at London Design Week 2011 found high interest.

Woodhouse, said: "Bamboo may seem like a strange material to use for a phone, but it’s actually extremely strong and very durable, perfect qualities for this kind of application.

"The whole experience so far has been incredible and completely unexpected.  Completing my final year and working has been challenging, but my course and the project complement each other well and it’s a great start of my career.  I can’t wait to see my mobile phone in shops this year."

Dr Andy Bardill, Woodhouse’s tutor, said: "The web has opened up the highly competitive design sphere and enabled those with talent to get noticed more easily.  Kieron-Scott’s is a remarkable designer and has made the most of the opportunities Middlesex has provided, which put him in good stead to make his new company a real success.”

Woodhouse's company A.D. will focus on launching in 'design aware' retailers and boutiques across the country.
