Wolfram Alpha launches $49.99 iPhone app

But don't call it a search engine...

Until now, it's only been navigation apps that have bucked the iPhone App Store's downward pricing trends.

However, website Wolfram Alpha now has a spin-off iPhone app that costs a whopping $49.99 (£29.99 here in the UK). Which may seem rather steep if you have a hazy idea of the site as 'that sciencey search engine'.

In fact, Wolfram Alpha describes itself as a "computational knowledge engine", boasting of 20 years of development, more than 50,000 built-in algorithms and over 10 trillion pieces of data.

Still not convinced? Well, the iPhone app is pitching itself as a replacement for "almost any kind of calculator or reference book - and much more", letting users compute answers to questions in areas including finance, food, maths, medicine, stocks and spacecraft.

In other words, it's priced against whizzy scientific calculators and encyclopedias. It's currently sitting in 63rd place in the UK App Store's Top Grossing chart, so some people clearly think it's good value.
