Wired Magazine launches iPad e-mag... and it's a 527MB download!

But it's whizzy, to say the least.

Magazine publisher Conde Nast has launched the long-awaited tablet version of its Wired Magazine, initially for iPad.

The June issue is available as an iPad app, costing $4.99 in the US App Store (and £2.99 here in the UK). The first thing that made our eyes pop out: it's a 527MB download.

However, the publisher has pulled out all the stops to make the download worth the wait. It includes additional video, slideshows, music and other interactive features.

An introductory letter from editor Chris Anderson explains that "The tablet is our opportunity to make the Wired we always dreamed of. It has all the visual impact of paper, enhanced by interactive elements like video and animated infographics."

For the first digital issue, that includes audio clips of Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor at work in the studio, and animation from Pixar's Toy Story 3.

"Over the next few months, we'll integrate social media and offer a variety of versions and a way to subscribe in digital form," adds Anderson.

Anderson says Wired is "using new digital publishing technology created by Adobe" to create the print mag and tablet version simultaneously.

I've been playing with it this morning, and it's a beautiful piece of work. Rival magazine publishers will be watching eagerly to see if the sales and revenues justify the investment.
