Windows Phone to become number two OS in 2015?

Predicted to overtake iOS and push it into third place with Nokia's help.

Microsoft's Windows Phone OS has just been given a new lease of life thanks to Nokia, and both firms will be hoping the partnership proves to be a bountiful one against market leaders Android and iOS.

It turns Microsoft and the Finns have nothing to fear, according to analyst IHS iSuppli. It says that with Nokia's assistance – namely the launch of the Lumia 900 in March 2012 – Windows Phones will see a year-on-year shipment increase to hit 16.7 per cent in 2015 and push iOS down to 16.6 per cent.

So it's not much of a lead, but nevertheless it is still a lead and it's a stark contrast from shipments in 2011, which was 1.9 per cent Windows Phone compared to 18 per cent iOS.

The report says that 2012 will begin the growth for WinPho, with shipments rising to nine per cent followed by 15.3 per cent in 2013 and it's expected that Nokia will account for half of all WinPho devices sold this year.

Meanwhile Android shipments continue to lead the way, growing from 47.4 per cent in 2011 to 58. 1 per cent in 2015.

Wayne Lam, senior analyst for wireless comms, IHS, said: "One of the hottest new products unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show was the Lumia 900, a Windows Phone-based smartphone sporting a flashy set of features that makes it competitive with the best alternatives offered by the Android camp.

"This hot product represents Nokia's first step to reclaim its market share. Combined with Nokia's efforts to drive the development of the Windows Phone ecosystem, the Lumia 900 and its successors will help Microsoft to reclaim its No. 2 ranking in smartphone operating system market share in 2015."
