Windows Marketplace hits 40,000 apps

Creeping up, but still less than a tenth of the Apple App Store

In fairness, Windows Marketplace is barely a year old and it's only now – with Nokia's flagship Lumia device hitting stores – that the OS is getting some serious media and consumer attention.

The store passed 30,000 apps in August, so it is growing at a steady clip.

News of the new milestone was reported by All About Windows Phone, which said that apps are being added at the rate of 165 items per day and that, in the last 30 days, 85 per cent of submissions were apps and 15 per cent were games.

Meanwhile 68 per cent were free, 23 per cent were paid and 9 per cent were paid with free trial.

All About Windows Phone expects 50,000 apps to be available in early January.
