Western European phone market up 1.5 per cent in Q2

But smartphone segment up 60 per cent, says IDC.

Overall, the shipment figure for Q2 2010 was 43.3 million units, with smartphones accounting for 14.6 million units to represent 34 per cent of the total, compared with 28 per cent in Q1 2010.

Android led the growth in most Western European countries. Shipments increased 450 per cent year on year and market share jumped from four per cent in 2Q09 to 15 per cent in 2Q10.

IDC believes Android will become the second biggest smartphone OS in Western Europe by 1Q11.

Strong smartphone sales also helped Sony Ericsson regain third position from LG, despite a 24 per cent year-on-year decline in total shipments. Its smartphone shipments increased 700 per cent, while feature phones plummeted 40 per cent.

The traditional-phone segment declined 14 per cent year on year and seven per cent sequentially to 28.7 million units. IDC says the price gap between high-end feature phones and smartphones is decreasing, and consumers are increasingly considering smartphones for their next upgrade rather than a feature phone.
