Western European e-book market grew 400 per cent in 2010

Good, but still less than one per cent of all spending on books.

A new report by Futuresource Consulting predicts a bright future for the space, which should be 15 per cent of total book sales by 2015 and generate €1.6 billion.

Other findings include:

* The UK dominates the market, contributing nearly half of all spend even though it accounts for just 15 per cent of all paper-based book revenue.

* The UK should generate £100 million this year – over five per cent of all spending on books.

* Amazon sold nearly 400,000 Kindles in the UK between August 2010 and December 2010 and generated around £20 million.

* Tablets rather than readers will dominate the German market. By 2015 the German tablets will account for close to half of all paid-for e-book sales in Germany, compared to around one in three in the UK and France.
