webOS disaster cost HP $3.3bn

Financials reveal hideous final bill for doomed OS adventure.

HP's Q4 and full-year fiscals show that while the cost was $3.3bn, the revenue from webOS's flagship tablet products, TouchPad, was just $200m

And that's why they call it the OuchPad.

How much the loss would have been if HP had decided to plough on with webOS and its own devices built on the platform is debatable, but the fact is that webOS is possibly for sale and the hardware division is no more.

Despite rumours of many potential acquirers (Amazon, Samsung, Microsoft etc), the future of webOS remains uncertain. It could even go open source. The most recent comment from the company came from new CEO Meg Whitman who said HP wouldn't be rushed either way.

Although webOS ripped $3.3bn from the balance sheet, HP still made GAAP net revenue for fiscal 2011of $127.2 billion, up one per cent on 2010.
