Albeit a survey that doesn't include iPhone sales in its figures.
A survey by Japanese market research firm BCN claims that Sony's Walkman players outsold Apple's iPods in the last week of August, with respective market shares of 43% and 42.1%.
Which sounds like great news for Sony, and would make Japan one of the few markets in the world where iPod has been unseated as the dominant music player.
But there's a big caveat: BCN's figures don't include sales of iPhones. Yet another piece of recent research from GfK claimed that the iPhone 3GS was the top-selling mobile handset in Japan in July.
In other words, Sony may be selling lots of Walkmans, but if you include iPhone sales, Apple is probably still the leading music device seller in Japan.
Of course, muddying the waters further is the fact that sales of Sony Ericsson Walkman-branded handsets presumably weren't counted either. Statistics, eh?
