Vringo buys $22m of patents from Nokia

Video ringtone specialist splashes on tech relating to 3G and 4G infrastructure.

Vringo and Nokia have been partners in the past. The video ringtone firm licensed its Facetones product for the Symbian platform last year. Facetones enable users to  activate an automated video slideshow using friends’ photos from social media and photo sites when they get a call.

It's unclear how the 500 new patents (some of them dating back to the 90s) enhance this offer.

And it's been hinted that Vringo bought them merely to monetise infringements. After Vringo recently merged with IP specialist Innovate/Protect, and filed a patent suit against AOL and Google.

AOL has agreed to settle and the Google case is on-going.
