Vodafone to buy RIM?

Seems far fetched, but rumours have pushed the RIM share price up ten per cent.

Speculation has surfaced claiming mobile phone network Vodafone is in the running to make a RIM purchase. The news comes in the midst of a terrible year for RIM marked by falling revenues and corporate disunity.

Neither RIM or Vodafone will comment on the takeover rumours. Vodafone, however, has seen its shares fall since the news broke.

It’s hard to think of a precedent for an operator buying a handset company. Usually, a network in search of its own devices would licence them, as Orange does with Huawei for example.

Other firms reported to be in the purchasing fray includes Oracle, Google and Microsoft, which is currently said to be circulating overhead for a second Yahoo! bid.

A spokesperson for RIM recently came forward to quash gossip after an analyst claimed the Blackberry PlayBook was to be discontinued.
