Operator says its library will grow to offer 6m songs this year
Vodafone says nearly 450,000 people have signed up to its various mobile/PC music subscription services since it signed DRM-free deals with all four major labels in 2009.
The company says the figure means it has the largest number of paying music subscribers in Europe and confirmed it will extend its catalogue (mostly managed by RealNetworks) from 2 million to 6 million tracks this year.
Vodafone added 100,000 new music subs in December across its eight largest markets (Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and UK).
Its says growth in subscriptions is being driven both by monthly 10-track MP3 bundles as well as from ‘all you can eat’ unlimited access subscription services.
Lee Epting, Director of Content at Vodafone Internet Services, said “We will carry on working hard with our partners in the music industry to develop new and innovative music services for our customers. Vodafone is starting to prove the significance of its place in the music industry.”
