MWC 2012: Vodafone and Visa form NFC payments partnership

Mobile wallet service pitched at 398m customers in 30 countries.

After so much talk, the mobile money and payments services are coming thick and fast now.

This project will be based on the Visa pre-paid account, and will initially launch in Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, and the UK this financial year, before rolling out elsewhere.

It will be open to partners in all manner of verticals including financial institutions, retailers, transport and utility companies – which can host their services within the new Vodafone mobile wallet.

Services will be based on NFC, which begs the usual questions around which handsets will support it.

At present there are virtually none, but one can assume that Vodafone is working on own-brand devices supporting NFC compatibility in the SIM.

Visa, of course, is already hard at work on NFC thanks to a well-publicised tie-up with Samsung.

Vittorio Colao, group CEO of Vodafone, said: "The Vodafone mobile wallet represents the next stage of the smartphone revolution. It offers our customers the speed, simplicity and convenience of managing their everyday transactions with a single wave or tap of their smartphone.

"Our mobile wallet will be open to any service provider and we are committed to enable all partners to provide our joint customers the richest service portfolio possible."

This week's MWC coverage is kindly sponsored by Neomobile, the leader in mobile commerce services. Neomobile is active in 70 geographies from 12 offices in Europe, LatAm and India. It offers a variety of mobile payment services via its Onebip mobile payment solution, featuring frictionless one-click mobile flow.

You say of NFC enabled phones that "At present there are [sic] virtually none". Not so; as demonstrated here http://www.nfcworld.com/nfc-phones-list/
