Vodafone abandons music DRM

World's largest telco accelerates the drift away from copy protection on full track downloads.

Vodafone has signed deals with Universal, Sony Music and EMI Music to offer DRM free tracks and albums across all its opcos on both mobile and PC. Warner and the various indie labels have not yet committed to removing copy protection, and will continue in WMA.

Customers who have already bought tracks from these three labels in WMA format (with DRM) will be able to upgrade them to MP3 at no extra charge.

“Music is central to many of our customers’ lives,” said Pieter Knook, director of Vodafone Internet Services.  “By Vodafone pioneering DRM free on mobile and offering MP3s on PC, they will now have the freedom to download tracks from their favourite artists without any device restrictions allowing them to experience their music however they want it, wherever they are.”

The operator believes it's the first to go DRM free on dual delivery.
