Another tasty operator deal for the mobile browser firm.
Russia's VimpelCom has teamed with Opera to deliver a mobile web browser optimised for feature phones.
It should be launched across its brands in 18 countries, starting in summer 2012, and provide a potential 200 million customers with faster and less data intensive surfing.
This is the special claim of Opera, which says its tech shrinks down webpages by up to 90 per cent before they reach the phone.
The firm reckons 250 million people use its web browsers across various devices. The product has even become a hit on the Apple App store.
The VimpelCom deal is just the latest in a series of operator partnerships. Opera works with Vodafone and signed with America Movil just a few days ago.
Mikhail Gerchuk, VimpelCom’s Group chief commercial officer, said: “Most of our customers live in emerging markets, where the demand for mobile internet access is rapidly accelerating, outpacing the penetration of smartphones and the deployment of 3G networks.
"In most of our markets, VimpelCom will be the first operator to provide this innovative mobile service, which will enable our customers to experience the mobile web and its exciting benefits."
