Verizon Wireless launches V Cast Media Manager cloud service

Allows online storage of people's content... and sharing.

Verizon Wireless is the latest mobile operator to launch a cloud-focused service: V CAST Media Manager.

It lets people store music, photos, videos and documents on Verizon's servers, then access them from their mobile handset, or from the desktop.

The service costs $2.99 a month for 25GB of storage, and allows users to create music and video playlists and photo albums, while also sharing media with family and friends.

Hang on: sharing? The official FAQ for Media Manager explains the limitations:

"The service allows you to share user generated (or 'non' copyright protected) content; media is easily identified as copyright protected, because it has an 'lock' image next to the name of the file."

However, this means it's unclear whether users are able to share unprotected MP3 and video files - something the copyright holders would be distinctly unhappy about.

The V CAST Media Manager app is available for a selection of the Android and BlackBerry models sold by Verizon, as well as some LG feature phones.

"This is our first step, but we think there’s a whole bunch of cool stuff that can follow," Verizon Wireless' VP of product development Kyle Malady tells MocoNews.
