US operator says it will allow rivals to Amazon's Kindle device to piggy-back its network.

Verizon Wireless has told Reuters that it plans to open its network to multiple e-reader devices following the success of Amazon's Kindle offering.

The $359 Kindle device enables users to download books and other content wirelessly over Sprint's 3G network in the US.

However, Verizon third party device certification exec Tony Lewis says there is room in the market for more competition.

He said: "Competitors to the Kindle are out there and ready. In 2009 I'd expect them to come to the market."

The move is part of Verizon's ongoing initiative to open its network to third party devices and applications.
