Verizon launches 'Shazam' for video

VideoSurf video discovery app lets users detect TV and movie content by filming it for a few seconds.

The partnership was first unveiled in January, and is now ready to roll out.

VideoSurf is available at no charge on selected Verizon smartphones from the Verizon Channel in Android Market.  It will be preloaded on more 4G LTE Verizon devices later this year.

It sounds like pretty amazing tech – although some US blogs have tested it and reported mixed results.

But no doubt VideoSurf, which has received investment from Verizon Ventures, will be hoping for Shazam-style adoption, and hoping to extend the tech into new areas.

Inevitably, there's a sharing element too, with Customers able to post their discoveries to Facebook and Twitter.

"Mobile represents a new era for video consumption and we look forward to providing users with the best way to discover videos and content on their smartphones," said Lior Delgo, chief executive officer and co-founder of VideoSurf.

"We are proud to be working with Verizon as it gives us a tremendous opportunity to reach millions with our new video discovery app."

VideoSurf claims to reach more than 20 million unique users per month, including more than 14 million on its website.
