US mobile music revs fall 28 per cent

But rumours or ringtone death are premature: they still generated over $250m.

According to the RIAA, mobile music sales fell to 221 units in 2010 from 306 million units in 2009.

But the market still made $527 million in 2010, of which ringtones contributed 49 per cent.

Even though ringtone sales were down 41 per cent, they still made $260 million. That's surely more than most observers would have predicted after the market began to slide in 2007.

Elsewhere, ringbacks remained at 20 per cent of the market, while full-length tracks and music videos grew to 31 per cent.

However, the RIAA counts as full-track mobile downloads those purchases made from online store via a mobile phone (rather than just those made from a made-for-mobile store).
