US mobile ads to top $1bn next year says eMarketer

Entering the digital mainstream?

Research firm eMarketer claims that the US mobile advertising market will be worth $1.1 billion in 2011, as it enters 'the mainstream of digital advertising'.

The company estimates that the US mobile ads market will be worth $743.1 million this year, up 79% from 2009's $416 million.

Further out, it forecasts $2.5 billion of US mobile advertising revenues in 2014.

"The expansion of the smartphone market and the attractive usage and demographic profile of smartphone owners have forced more marketers to pay closer attention to mobile," says senior analyst Noah Elkin.

eMarketer's report claims that this year, video, display and search advertising will grow by 124%, 122% and 122% respectively.

However, in terms of pure revenues, messaging will be top dog in 2010, accounting for $327 million of revenues.

eMarketer's overall 2010 forecast of $743.1 million has been upped from its original prediction of $593 million, thanks to the efforts of Apple and Google.

"It is safe to say that many marketers who had not previously considered mobile advertising are now eager to tap into its potential, thanks to the stamp of legitimacy applied to the medium by the high-profile entrance of companies such as Apple and Google," says Elkin.
