US mobile ad market to hit $2bn in 2012

Smartphone fever driving the space up from 1.34bn last year.

A new whitepaper from adsmobi and industry analyst mobileSQUARED reckons 155.6m smartphones will be sold in the US next year to reap a phenomenal impact on mobile internet usage.

It asserts US mobile internet penetration will hit 48 per cent in 2012.

Within the smartphone space, Android will consolidate its strong position in 2012, with a 25 per cent market share.

Nick Lane, mobileSQUARED's chief analyst, said: "The strong growth of smartphones is generating an incredible uplift in inventory and having a powerful impact on mobile advertising in the US."

adsmobi is a mobile media buying platform that places mobile campaigns for advertisers. It was formed by ex-Smaato execs and works in partnership with the latter to provide inventory for its clients.

The firm recent expanded its US service by hiring Patrick Ashby as sales director West Coast and adding a team in New York.
