NPD says 11 per cent of all phones sold in 3Q 2007 in the US are smartphones.This represents a huge leap for the sector, up from just four percent of all phone sales in Q3 2006. The iPhone has a lot to do with it of course, having sold 1.4 million units since June. But the Americans have always loves their Blackjacks, Treos, Palms and Blackberrys. This bodes well for Google’s Android gambit, which will bring smartphone functionality to devices with its open software platform.
