Early days, but revenues still restrained.
Magazine publishers are excited about the potential for sales of digital issues via apps, but are their initial efforts proving lucrative?
Er... Not yet. Figures from the US Audit Bureau of Circulations show that Conde Nast's Wired magazine sold 23,000 issues in November, down from 73,000 in May when it made its debut.
Meanwhile, stablemates Vanity Fair and GQ sold 8,700 and 11,000 iPad issues in November respectively. Rival publisher Rodale sold 2,000 iPad issues of Men's Health the same month.
PaidContent analyses the figures, and finds Conde Nast UK's general manager Albert Read freely admitting that apps are still at the experimental stage.
"It’s a punt. A long-term hope is that we create something exciting for readers and advertisers – and that brings its own returns over time. In five years we will have reaped those benefits."
