US dominating BlackBerry App World app downloads

86% of one top-selling app's sales came from the US, says RIM.

The US is accounting for the lion's share of downloads from BlackBerry App World, judging by stats shared by Research In Motion today at its BlackBerry Developer Conference.

Application development consultant Neil Sainsbury revealed figures for an anonymous paid app that's been in the Top 20 chart on App World since launch.

86% of its sales were to US customers, followed by 6% from the UK, and 4% from Canada. Sainsbury stressed that these figures were for that one app rather than the App World as a whole, but the fact that it's a top-seller implies a similar dominance across the board.

"The stats don't lie," he said. "Overwhelmingly it is English-speaking people who are buying BlackBerry apps, and people from the US specifically.

Meanwhile, he also showed stats for the unnamed app's sales by device, with 45% coming from the 8300 and 8500 Curve series, and 21% from the Storm.

However, the Storm over-indexed according to its 10% share of devices sold at the time. the data was collected. "Storm users are a bit more prolific when it comes to apps," said Sainsbury.

He also outlined a series of tips for developers looking to make their apps successful - which we're saving for a dedicated feature later this week.
