The European Commission agrees voluntary initiative with the local industry.
It looks like the utopian dream of a one charger fits all world (or continent at least) could be a step nearer, with the industry and politicians agreeing to work towards a universal charger based on a micro-USB connection.
It's hoped deal, which is only voluntary at this stage, will mean the discarded charger mountain will start to be reduced, saving money and the planet in the process.
Ten companies have so far signed the memorandum of understanding, including Nokia, Apple and Sony Ericsson.
