Unity launches new Union division to target new games platforms

Including mobile devices.

Unity Technologies has launched a new business unit dedicated to helping developers make games for mobile devices, connected TVs and set-top boxes.

It's called Union, and is led by the company's VP of strategy Brett Seyler.

"We have encountered a huge thirst for great games from a huge range of platforms, and a broad range of these opportunities are currently only being captured by large game publishers," says CEO David Helgason.

"With Union, we help smaller developers band together to approach these opportunities as one. We see Union as a further step on the road to the democratisation of game development."

Here's how Union will work: as a central resource for games developed using the Unity engine, which will be ported to new platforms as and when they become available.

The owners of those platforms can dip into the catalogue to populate their digital stores, with developers getting 80% of net revenues generated by their games.

"Union offers game developers a one-stop route to a wide range of revenue streams, allowing them to focus more energy on making great games instead of worrying about how to make money," says Seyler.

"Platform owners are thrilled to sign up great games from a variety of developers through a single point of contact – there’s enormous mutual benefit to be unlocked here."

The official website gives more details of the process in its explanatory text:

"We expect to have lots of games available for placement with publishers and platforms. In most cases, we expect publishers to pick and choose the games they want based on a demo, a published version of the game on another platform, videos, screenshots, or all of the above."
