Unity iPhone development platform hits v1.5

Includes iPhone 3GS support, anti-piracy protection and a 3x performance boost.

Unity Technologies has announced version 1.5 of its Unity middleware platform for iPhone.

The company claims it's up to three times faster than the previous version, while it also supports the new shading features on the iPhone 3GS, for developers working on rich 3D games.

Developers will be pleased with another new feature: anti-piracy protection. Unity 1.5 can identify if Apple's DRM has been removed from a game, and modify its behaviour accordingly.

Unity says hundreds of iPhone games have already been made with the previous version of its platform. "We're all about making the leanest, meanest development tools, and this release cements that commitment," says chief creative officer Nicholas Francis.

"With Unity iPhone 1.5, we’ve squeezed out performance everywhere we could and added a bunch of features to help people take advantage of the new iPhone models.”

The first game to use the new version of the platform is the recently released Touch KO: an attractive 3D boxing game developed by just two people using Unity.
