The MDA says 17 million people in the UK accessed the mobile internet in December.
That figure is equivalent to 23 per cent of the country's mobile users and is up from 16.2 million in November.Elsewhere in the Mobile Data Association's Q1 2008 UK Mobile Trends Report, it's revealed that 56.9 billion SMSes were sent during 2007, representing 40 per cent annual growth.
In terms of MMS, 448,962,359 picture messages sent in 2007, which the MDA says is equivalent to 19 million traditional (24 exposure) rolls of camera film.
No annual MMS growth figures were provided, but December 2007 volumes were up 55 per cent on December 2007 - 1,977,308 video and picture messages were sent on New Years Eve.
Mike Short, chairman of the MDA, said: "We are really starting to see a much greater variety of mobile data volumes. New devices, competitive data tariffs and wider content choice mean it has never been easier for users to send an email, take a picture or access Internet content. This is a very important set of indicators."
