And we thought there was no money left...

The BBC reports that the UK government has spent tens of thousands of pounds developing applications for the iPhone.

The information was gleaned from a Freedom of Information report that put development costs at £10,000 to £40,000 for each app.

Among those so far created are the Job Centre Plus tool to help jobseekers (there are obviously lots of unemployed people with iPhones), a Foreign Office travel advice app, a DVLA Motoring Masterclass app and NHS Drinks Tracker among others.

There are also Home Office apps in development, but details of these aren't available due to 'security concerns' - location-based apps for secret agents, perhaps?

The details have caused quite a furore in the context of the deep cuts only just announced by the government, so it remains to be seen if apps will continue to see similar levels of public money invested in them.
