'Tis the season for development competitions - now its UIQ's turn.
The UIQ Open 2008 has opened its doors for entries as Sony Ericsson and Motorola look for the killer apps that will consolidate their joint ownership of the software platform. The aim of the contest is to find the 'most innovative, useful and entertaining third-party applications' for UIQ-powered phones.
With Sony Ericsson and Motorola yesterday stressing that they are looking for more handset vendor licensees for UIQ, it appears the partners are preparing to take the technology beyond mobile user-interface.
This could mean increased competition for Nokia's Series 60 smartphone OS (which like UIQ is tied into Symbian technology) or part of a defensive move against any plans the likes of Google may have in the phone OS space.
For the UIQ Open 2008 a panel of judges will select two winning applications in each of the five categories (Business, Mobility, Lifestyle, Entertainment and Utilities) and the winners will be announced during the first few weeks of 2008.
