TwitVid.io rebrands as Vidly to look beyond Twitter

Mobile video uploads firm TwitVid.io has a new name, and plans to expand its focus.

Video startup TwitVid.io, which started life letting people upload videos live from their webcams while automatically posting a link on Twitter, has changed its name.

The company is now called Vidly, and plans to support other social media sites besides Twitter, including YouTube, Facebook and MySpace.

"We wanted to open up our horizons and not get locked into Twitter," CEO Chrys Bader tells VentureBeat. "We see a major opportunity to make video sharing easy for mobile."

With that in mind, the company will apparently release Android and BlackBerry applications this Autumn, allowing users to effectively broadcast live from their handsets.

Previously, mobile users had to email videos from their phone to dedicated email addresses, which was a slightly fiddly method considering the rash of video-to-Twitter iPhone apps that have sprung up recently.

Alongside its rebranding, Vidly has secured $500,000 of funding from angel investors.
