Twitter set to top 18m active US users by Christmas

That's what analyst eMarketer reckons, anyway.

By the end of this year, there will be 18 million US adults accessing Twitter at least once a month, with mobile contributing to that growth, claims analyst firm eMarketer

It's just upped that prediction from its estimate in April that there would be 12.1 million US adults actively using the microblogging service this year.

While web analytics firms like Nielsen, comScore and Compete offer their guesses at how popular the Twitter website is, that doesn't include stats on people accessing Twitter through mobile means - either messaging, apps or mobiel web.

However, eMarketer analyst Paul Verna warns that while Twitter is growing fast, it's also showing signs of sharp user churn.

"There are indications that large numbers of users are abandoning Twitter after a short period of experimentation, and another sizeable contingent seems to use the service only sporadically," he says.
