Whisper software to go offline during transfer period.
The social network has over 100 million active users and 55 per cent of that amount access their account via mobile devices.
Presumably, Twitter's purchase of mobile security and solutions startup Whisper Systems is to protect their users from the current reports of mobile viruses and hacking.
Whisper Systems is known for providing mobile data security tools specific to Google's Android OS. Financial details haven't been revealed but Whisper Systems was keen to make the announcement on its blog.
Of the takeover, Whisper Systems, blogged: "Now that we're joining Twitter, we're looking forward to bringing our technology and our expertise into Twitter's products and services.
"The Whisper Systems software as our users know it will live on (and we have some surprises in store that we're excited about), but there is unfortunately a transition period where we will have to temporarily take our products and services offline.

"RedPhone service will be interrupted immediately, but FlashBack users have a month to pull off any backup data they would like before that service also goes offline."
It's possible Twitter has made the acquisition in light of Facebook's recent security problems, which saw the network plagued with violent content posted across user newsfeeds.
In addition to this, we also reported that there have been more than 60 million social network account hacks in the UK over the past year.
