Turf Wars iPhone game blends mafia hits with GPS

Not real mafia hits, obviously. Maybe in a future update...

Mafia-themed social games have been a big hit on iPhone, with players scrambling to sign up friends, carry out virtual hits, and work their way up the mob ladder.

However, US firm MeanFreePath has added a new spin to the genre: GPS.

Its new game Turf Wars contains the usual elements, with missions to build up cash and experience, attacks on other players, and social features to invite friends.

However, the 'turf' element involves claiming unoccupied places in the real-world, up to a mile from the iPhone's location. The more turf they collect, the more influence a player has - which helps them earn more money.

It's certainly a new take on the overcrowded mob genre on iPhone, although we suspect there will be plenty of rivals as existing games add similar features in the coming months.
