Streaming music service reaches 40m active listeners as mobile listeners jump by 267 per cent year-on-year.

TuneIn, the streaming music, news and sports service, has closed a $16 million funding round.

The service is available as a website, mobile apps and through other connected devices and offers access to more than 70,000 radio stations, while also providing on-demand shows and podcasts.

TuneIn now has an active monthly audience in excess of 40 million and adds that its mobile listener base has grown 267 per cent over the last 12 months.

This latest round of funding follows $6m raised in 2010, bringing its total to $22m. Chief executive John Donham said that the money will be spent on new staff and investment in product development and marketing.
