Touchnote on Apple Cards: It's brilliant for us

CEO Oded Ran says the Apple move 'validates' its vision.

When Apple announced on Tuesday that it was to launch a Cards app for sending physical cards from the iPhone, Twitter-based wags (ME among them) immediate penned 'that's the end of Touchnote' messages.

That was a bit hasty.

Immediately, Touchnote hit back, reminding the market that Apple had actually vindicated the mission it's been on aince 2008.

Oded Ran, CEO of Touchnote, told ME: "When the world's biggest tech company validates your idea, it has to be a good thing. Within minutes we had the BBC and others writing about us. That can only be great news."

Ran is optimistic because he believes other firms - OEMs, operators, brands - will want to replicate Apple's service, and it is ready to meet the call. Indeed, it already embeds its app on all Sony Ericsson's high end Android phones.

He also reckons the differences between the two services will help Touchnote to appeal to different consumers with different objectives. "Apple's cards cost $2.99 or $4.99. they're on cotton paper and delivered in an envelope. They're obviously going for the 'special occasion' whereas our cards are $1.49. We want to appeal to the impulse.

"It's sounds cheesy, but it's all about happiness. Those moments when you just want to share something with someone."

Ran believes a revolt back to 'analogue' will benefit all players in their sector (and there are many others). "Ulitmately our battle is not with Apple but with SMS and email and picture messaging."

Touchnote sends cards to over 200 countries at the rates of 'thousands' a week.

doing similar services for as little as $0.99 cents.

Touchnote is one of my top apps - it's really simple to use and just works so well. If I were Google or Microsoft I'd get on the phone to the team ASAP. Big opportunity for this company.
