Toptable on iPhone: 100k downloads but mixed reviews

It's two-star average rating hints at disappointment for some of those downloaders.

Online restaurant bookings service Toptable says its iPhone app has been downloaded 100,000 times in the fortnight since it launched.

"This shows there is a huge demand to access restaurant information and book online and on the go," says marketing director Carl Lyons.

"We think this is great news for restaurateurs and customers alike. Toptable is committed to providing fresh ways for people to search and book great restaurant deals."

Which sounds fair enough. But while the press release announcing the 100k downloads quotes several approving reviewers from the App Store, a glance at the app's page reveals a distinctly more mixed reaction from users.

On the UK App Store, Toptable's app currently has an average rating of just two stars (out of five). 448 out of its 944 ratings are one-star, compared to 121 people giving it five stars.

Looking through reviews, it seems that a lot of those one-star reviews come from people who downloaded the app, but can't find any restaurants in their area.

UPDATE: As a comment from Charles Astwood points out below - we assume that's Toptable's head of innovation Charles Astwood - several other free apps have similarly low review scores.
