Subscription music service appealing to iPhone, BlackBerry and Android users.

US mobile firm Thumbplay says its new Thumbplay Music subscription service has generated 500,000 mobile app downloads since its launch in June.

The service offers subscribers unlimited access to a catalogue of 10 million tracks, and has apps available for iPhone, BlackBerry and Android smartphones.

It costs $9.99 a month, but the initial app download is free with a trial, and Thumbplay has not announced how many of those 500,000 downloaders turned into paying customers.

The company has provided other stats though. 70% of Thumbplay Music users are male, with 25-34 year-olds the largest demographic, followed closely by 35-44 year-olds.

90% of music on the service is streamed to smartphones - the other 10% is to PCs and Macs, since it's cross-platform. Meanwhile, 95% of songs streamed are from the 'long tail' - tracks outside the 20 most popular.

Interestingly, no one smartphone platform dominates Thumbplay Music's mobile stats. 39% of usage comes from iPhone, 36% from BlackBerry and 25% from Android.

"Having more than 500,000 downloads under our belts at this early stage is a testament to the desire for people to have anytime, anywhere access to an unlimited music catalogue," says CEO Evan Schwartz.

Thumbplay Music will also extend into the living room next year, with a launch scheduled for connected TVs.
