Thumbplay launches full-track music

Beta version of store offers 1.5 million DRM-free songs in MP3 format.

US direct-to-consumer content giant Thumbplay has taken the wraps off its new music store.

The 1.5 million track library offers songs from majors EMI and Universal and indie labels The Orchard and Ingrooves.

Content can be downloaded to 2,000 compatible handsets or to a PC. And because the tracks are DRM-free MP3's they'll work on iTunes/iPod etc.

Payment is so not straightforward, however. Individual tracks can be bought for 99 cents but only as part of a $9.99 a month site wide subscription (equivalent to 10 Thumbplay credits - each song = one credit).

Thumbplay says its web portal attracts five million unique visitors a month and its WAP site (m.thumbplay.com) 12 million page views in the same period.
