Susan Boyle's 1.1m CD sales remind us there's an army of digital refuseniks out there.

Last year I received the perfect middle aged man's gift for Christmas. That's got you thinking hasn't it? Was it a nasal hair trimmer, a boxed set of Woody Allen DVDs or a Carla Bruni calendar? Actually, it was even better than all the above - it was a USB turntable.

I'm sure you've seen these. You plug them into your PC, load up Audacity or Garage Band and record all those vinyl albums that Spotify and iTunes can't find. In my case, original soundtrack recordings of Michel Legrand scores and the complete works of Johnny Guitar Watson.

Oh, the bliss of re-discovering those beloved songs and transferring them in real time, marred only by children laughing and pointing 'what the hell is that?' at the strange revolving oddity before them.

Which reminds me of the other great gift idea for the middle-aged man.

To be left alone for a bit.

Anyhow, it now seems as if my hankering for vinyl is not so anachronistic. This week it emerged that this most archaic of formats is on a growth spurt.
According to data from Nielsen Soundscan, US sales have already passed two million, beating the 2008 total of 1.9 million.
